There is a particular kind of happiness that comes from settling into a comfortable chair with a good book, a warm drink and absolutely no intention of answering messages for the next hour.
Add a soft blanket, gentle lighting and a mug that understands your priorities, and you have the ultimate reading nook routine.
The priorities, naturally, are:
- Read the book.
- Sip the drink.
- Ignore the laundry.
- Read just one more chapter.
If your perfect afternoon involves stories, coffee, tea and a little escape from reality, this cosy routine is for you.
Create a Reading Nook That Invites You to Stay
Your reading nook does not need to be an entire room with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. Although, if you have one of those, I am quietly jealous.
A reading nook can be a favourite armchair, the corner of your sofa, a window seat or even a sunny spot at the kitchen table. The secret is to make it comfortable and easy to return to.
Start with a few simple details:
- A soft throw blanket or cushion
- A small side table for your book and drink
- Warm, focused lighting
- A bookmark within easy reach
- Your current read somewhere visible
- A phone placed on silent or Do Not Disturb
The aim is to create a gentle cue for your brain: this is reading time.
When the same chair, blanket and warm drink become part of the ritual, it becomes much easier to choose a few quiet pages instead of accidentally scrolling for 45 minutes while learning something extremely specific about a celebrity’s houseplant collection.

The 20-Minute Reading Nook Routine
You do not need an entire free afternoon to enjoy a proper reading ritual. Twenty minutes is enough to create a little pocket of calm.
1. Do a two-minute reset
Straighten the blanket, clear the side table and move anything that does not belong in your nook.
This is not a deep clean. We are not reorganising the entire house. We are simply making enough room for a book, a mug and your elbow.
2. Choose your reading drink
Pick a drink based on the mood of your book.
- Coffee for energetic mornings or page-turning mysteries
- Tea for slower afternoons and thoughtful fiction
- Hot chocolate for comfort reads
- Chai for cosy fantasy or historical novels
- Decaf or herbal tea for evening reading
The brewing process becomes part of the experience. Notice the scent, the warmth and the small pause before you begin.
3. Set a tiny reading goal
Choose one of these:
- Ten pages
- One chapter
- Fifteen minutes
- One scene
- “I will read until my drink is finished”
A small goal makes reading feel achievable, especially on busy days. And once you are comfortably settled, you may find that your tiny goal mysteriously expands.
One chapter becomes two. Two becomes “well, now I need to know what happens next”.
4. Leave a note for tomorrow
Before you close the book, write one quick line about what you read. It could be a favourite quote, a character thought or simply:
“Things are getting suspicious.”
This makes it easier to return to the story next time and gives your future self a helpful little breadcrumb.

Maple Cardamom Latte
Maple syrup adds a cosy sweetness, while cardamom brings a warm, lightly spiced flavour.

- A small pinch of ground cardamom
- Optional: cinnamon for serving

- Pour over your espresso or strong coffee.
- Add a little cinnamon on top.
This one is lovely with reflective non-fiction, slow literary fiction or any book you have been meaning to read for approximately six months.
Three Tea Ideas for a Calmer Reading Ritual
Coffee may be the star of the morning, but tea brings its own special kind of warmth.
As a general guide, black tea is usually happy with water just off the boil and a three-to-five-minute steep. Green tea often tastes better with slightly cooler water and a shorter two-to-three-minute steep. Herbal teas can generally handle boiling water and a longer five-to-seven-minute infusion.
Always adjust to your taste. You are the boss of your mug.
Honey Vanilla Chamomile
Steep chamomile tea for five to seven minutes, then add honey and a small splash of vanilla extract.
For a floral touch, add a very small pinch of culinary lavender. Go gently , lavender is enthusiastic and can take over the conversation.
Spiced Rooibos Reading Chai
Combine rooibos tea with a pinch of cinnamon, cardamom and clove. Steep in hot water for five minutes, then add warm milk and honey.
It is full of chai-style warmth and makes a beautiful evening drink when you want something cosy without reaching for another coffee.
Earl Grey with Orange and Honey
Brew Earl Grey tea, then add honey and a strip of orange peel or a small squeeze of orange juice.
The citrus lifts the floral tea and creates a bright, comforting drink for memoirs, essays or an afternoon chapter in the sunshine.

Why I Love Creating Bookish Designs
I’m Kimberley, the artist and creative behind Kimberley Ann Art & Photography.
I create original abstract art and digital designs that bring a little warmth, joy and individuality to everyday products. For me, the fun is in transforming ordinary items into pieces that feel expressive and personal.
A mug can be practical, but it can also say something about you.
It can say:
- “I am currently emotionally involved in this fictional world.”
- “Please do not interrupt unless you have snacks.”
- “I bought this book weeks ago and I am still admiring it.”
- “Coffee, blankets and good books are a perfectly reasonable personality.”
My designs are created to help people unleash their imagination and celebrate the things that make them who they are. Whether that is books, cats, coffee, chickens, dogs or wonderfully specific humour, I love creating pieces that make people smile.
Build Your Own Reading Nook Menu
To make your routine even more enjoyable, create a small weekly menu.
Monday: Vanilla honey coffee and ten pages
Tuesday: Earl Grey with orange and one chapter
Wednesday: Cinnamon mocha and a comfort reread
Thursday: Maple cardamom latte and a new book
Friday: Rooibos chai and a longer evening session
Saturday: Your favourite drink, your favourite chair and no reading goals at all
Sunday: Reset the nook and choose next week’s book
The best routine is one you actually enjoy repeating.
So make your drink, pick your book, settle under the blanket and let the world wait for a little while.
Brew something lovely. Open a good book. Make room for joy.
And if you read more than one chapter, that is between you and the mug.
